The Academic Medical Centre Amsterdam (AMC) is one of the foremost research institutions in the Netherlands, and one of its largest hospitals. Over 7,000 people work here to provide integrated patient care, fundamental and clinical scientific research, and teaching. The AMC provides a breeding ground for fruitful scientific collaboration. Some 1,500 of staff are employed in medical research, which is regularly subjected to scrutiny by a panel of international scientists. The AMC is committed to supporting researchers careers and has implemented a talent policy providing incentive for talented researchers to move to a new institution, possibly abroad. In addition, the AMC hosts the AMC Graduate School, which organises doctorate-level academic training of AMC PhD students and awarded 217 PhDs in 2015.

The Department of Medical Informatics is one of the leading Medical Informatics departments in the Netherlands and Europe. It is one of the few groups that provides training and research at BSc, MSc and PhD level, resulting in some 300 MSc graduates and over 40 awarded PhDs.
